Do Humidifiers Really Help Houseplants?

The Problem
Winter is often harsh for exotic indoor plants. Central heating turn living rooms into arid zones, causing previously vibrant prayer plants with dry, brittle leaf margins. Spraying can increase moisture levels, but the effects are short-lived.

The Hack
A digital moisture dispenser provides a continuous mist to increase humidity around your plants. You simply refill the tank with water and let it run for a few hours a day, so moisture readings resemble the tropics rather than a dry indoor environment.

How It Works
Unlike pebble trays or spraying, moisture devices provide reliable, quantifiable results. Foliage lose less water through their leaves, meaning less stress and additional resources for growth. Theoretically, it should prevent the dreaded dry leaf margin issue entirely.

The Experiment
I tested a tabletop unit beside my calatheas. Following a fortnight, the difference was noticeable: no new brown tips, glossier leaves and fresh growth. Drawbacks? Refilling the tank, cleaning to prevent mould, the low hum, and electricity use. Budget options can break quickly, and larger ones can be pricey.

The Verdict
For enthusiasts of humid-loving species, a moisture generator is a worthwhile purchase. It isn’t essential for hardy species such as sansevierias or Zamioculcas, but for drama queens such as calatheas, it can be the difference between struggling to live and thriving.
