RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
