Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
